City Times Staff
The intersection at E. Grand Ave. and 8th St. South will be closed starting May 22.
A city press release lined out one of many reasons construction will start, citing most importantly the high amount of crashes at the intersection. According to the city, “existing pavement and pedestrian facilities are showing signs of deterioration and do not meet current design standards”.
Crews will start on reconstructing the intersection that will include new traffic signals and lane configuration in an effort to improve safety. Also seeing an upgrade will be water main and sanitary sewer, as well as pedestrian markings.
Roadway closures will begin at Peach St., 9th St., Oak St., and 7th St. There will be a marked detour route for drivers to navigate the area, as well as pedestrian crossings. The construction will not impede access to parcels adjacent to the construction.
A detailed detour route will be marked for 8th Street S. Traffic will be detoured off 8th Street S utilizing Chestnut Street, Lincoln Street, Jackson Street, Market Street, and Baker Street. Estimated completion of construction is slated for September of this year.
The city encourages safe driving in and around the areas of the detour, adding “a little patience never hurt either.”
