Predictions of what was to be a hard fought game between the Assumption Royals varsity football team and Abbotsford Falcons came true tonight as the Royals took a 20-14 loss to the Falcons
The loss brings the Assumption season record to 2-1 as Abbotsford remains undefeated at 3-0.
The Royals come off two straight shutout wins; 49-0 against Greenwood/Granton on August 21 and 56-0 against Thorp on August 28. The Falcons have had similar big wins; a 61-0 shutout against Gilman on August 21 and a 49-12 win over Greenwood/Granton.
The Falcons took an early lead in the first quarter after #20, junior runningback Ethan Kramas took the ball five yards into the end zone leading to a 7-0 lead. A TD by #21, senior RB Cooper Henrickson on an 11 yard run brought the score to 14-0.
The Royals immediately returned the score with an 81-yard kickoff return for a TD by #2, senior QB Isaac Kollock. An extra point kicked by #72, junior Brandon Birkhauser reduced the lead to 14-7.
A 55-yard pass reception brought another TD by Henrickson, bringing the Falcons to a 20-7 lead at the end of the first half.
The Royals held the Falcons to zero points in the second half but were unable to take the lead. A TD by #22, senior RB Brady Baltus brought the score to 20-14 with just over two minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
The Falcons rushed for a total 238 yards while the Royals netted 195. Kramas led the Falcons with 96 yards while Baltus carried 136 for the Royals.
The Royals travel to Athens next Friday to take on the Blue Jays at 7:00 PM. The Blue Jays’ record is 2-0 as of September 3.
