HUDSON — The Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings went 2-1 over the weekend, improving their season record to 10-3.
On Friday and Saturday night, they would take on Hudson, where they came away with 3-2, and 8-0 wins, respectively. The first game would see no goals in the first period, only for Havoc player Mason Trowbridge to knock in an early goal to put Hudson up 1-0.
However, Rich Young soon responded, evening the score at 1-1 in what would become a nailbiter for both teams. Two late third period goals would send it into overtime tied at two, where Brett DeLatt found the back of the net, assisted by Ryan Mantz, to give the Riverkings a 3-2 win.
Saturday night told a much different story. On the strength of five first period goals the Riverkings would come away with an 8-0 shutout of the Havoc. Two goals by Alexander Mavrogaiannis, as well as help from veteran Ryan Mantz, Austyn Quarters, and Cole Creger. Raymond Fleming and Daniil Piliya would also contribute goals of their own. Goalie Parker Rutherford knocked away 14 shots on the high for yet another shutout on the year.
On Sunday, the Riverkings would take on rivals Chicago Cougars at home, where they would drop their first home loss of the season 4-1. An improved Chicago defense would hold the Riverkings to no goals over the first three periods until Rich Young found paydirt late in the game on a short-handed goal.
The Riverkings are back in action this Friday and Saturday night as they host the Decatur Blaze at the Wood County Recreation Center, 2711 16th St. South.
