The Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings are one game away from a championship appearance in Boston.
They picked up a 2-1 win last night against the Chicago Cougars in semifinal action. The game was fast and physical, both teams were scoreless heading into the third period.
With the scored tied 0-0 going into the third period Reed Kaiser scored off a beautiful feed from Ryan Mantz to give the Riverkings the lead. However, Chicago responded just two minutes later to even the score at 1-1 with a goal from Jonathan Moskuluk.
The kings of the river finally cashed in on a late power play, being up a man with 2:03 to play in regulation. With overtime looming, Kevin Van Bokkelen scored the game winner with only 23 seconds left on the clock. Harrison Kohl and J.R. Stiles provided the assist.
Goalie Erik Schuette turned aside over 29 shots to pick up the win.
Game two of this best-of-three playoff series is tonight at the South Wood County Recreation Center. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
