Rapids Man Pleads No Contest to Reduced Charges

A 25 year-old man pleaded no contest to 2nd degree reckless homicide in 2012 drug case that resulted in the death of a 26 year-old Stevens Point woman.
Milton Smith of Wisconsin Rapids appeared before Judge John Finn on Tuesday. He had initially been charged with 1st degree reckless homicide and delivering drugs to Jessica Newby of Stevens Point.
Newby was found unresponsive in her West Street home and later died. Police reports say she purchased heroin from Smith before she was found by a neighbor, who then called police.
Smith, who is facing a possible maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and a $100,00 fine, is currently incarcerated in a Green Bay jail following a previous drug conviction in Outagamie County for the manufacture and delivery of cocaine.
Assistant District Attorney Cass Cousins is requesting a 20 year sentence with seven years incarceration, followed by 13 years extended supervision in exchange for the plea to the reduced charge.
Smith is due back in court for sentencing on June 23.
