The La Crosse Aquinas girls soccer team, ranked #4, provided stiff competition for Assumption, and the Royals were up to the challenge, matching the Blugolds and earning a 1-1 tie.
Neither team could score in the first half, as goalies Gena Grundhoffer and Kyan Steiner kept the scoreboard blank.
“We came in tonight’s match with a gameplan focused on those nearest the ball,” said Assumption coach John Bingham. “It paid off as we held a high quality Aquinas team to only one goal and found the back of the net ourselves.”
The Royals struck first in the second half, with Elle Panzer scoring with an assist from Gracie Wendels at the 58 minute mark.
Aquinas kept the pressure on, and nine minutes later, Nora Rhentaman scored unassisted to tie things up.
Grundhoffer had a busy evening, saving 16 shots for the Royals, while her counterpart, Steiner, had 7 saves.
“Gena made some brilliant saves up near the top bar,” said Bingham.
