Betty M. Capling
Betty Marcia (Wales) Capling, 95, Pittsville, died on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at the United Church of Christ, Pittsville with Rev. Wanda Veldman officiating. Burial will take place in Mound Cemetery, Pittsville at a later date. The family will receive relatives and friends from 1:30 pm until service time at the United Church of Christ. Military rites will be conducted at the church by the American Legion Post 153 of Pittsville, following the service. Buchanan/Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Betty was born in Polo, Illinois to Frank and Carrie (Lichty) Wales. Her stepmother was Lucile (Wade) Wales. She was a 1941 graduate of Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa where she received a BSM degree and taught in Iowa. From 1942 until 1951 she was employed as an executive secretary for A & P Tea Company in Chicago. She later was a substitute teacher in Pittsville schools from 1977 until 1991. She was a veteran of the United States WAVES serving during World War II from 1944 until her honorable discharge in 1946.
Betty was united in marriage to Dr. Robert D. Capling in 1948 in Chicago.
Betty began the first Girl Scout troop in Pittsville and was a Girl Scout leader and consultant for 19 years. She served as a member of the Women’s Board of the YMCA, was a member and served as an organist for 50 years and as president of the United Church of Christ, Pittsville, the Auxiliary of Wisconsin Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, The Pittsville Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, The American Legion Post 153, Pittsville, and The American Legion Auxiliary, Pittsville for 60 years, Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was one of the founders of the Pittsville Library and Board member for 38 years. She taught piano to both children and adults and accompanied many voice students for music contests.
Betty is survived by 3 daughters and a son, Mara Lee Searing of Whitewater, Wendy Bass, Robin (Clifford) Randall, all of Pittsville, and David Capling of Gulf Breeze, FL. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Mark (Heidi) Randall of Friesland, Josh (Whitney) Rabbitt of Hawaii, and Chivaun (Brian) Schiferl of Marshfield and 5 great grandchildren, Austin Randall, Morgan and Madison Randall, and Olivia and Dylan Schiferl. She is also survived by 4 sisters, Evelyn (Wilbur) Bowman, Helen Wales, and Joyce (Richard) Person, all of Polo, IL, and Patricia (Don) Deardorff of California.
She was predeceased by her parents, stepmother, her husband, Robert, a grandson, Luke Randall, a sister, Margaret Brown, sons-in-law, Carl Searing and Martin Bass.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be designated in Betty’s name to The Pittsville Public Library.
