In a mistake ridden homecoming game, the Assumption Royals varsity football team fell to the McDonell Central Macks 6-28 after going scoreless until the fourth quarter.

The Royals come off a big 44-7 win over Loyal last week but that momentum didn’t translate this week. Despite some solid defense, multiple penalties and fumbles killed whatever advantage the Royals were able to muster throughout the game.

The Macks scored first Friday night with a touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Grayson Knowlton at 7:15 in the first quarter. A failed extra point attempt brought the score to 0-6. Another TD pass with just 34 second left in the second quarter brought the first half score to 0-12.

After a scoreless third quarter the Macks scored with a 27-yard TD pass to junior WR Nathan Hoglund. A failed two-point conversion attempt brought the score to 18-0. Another TD run and successful two point conversion at 8:26 in the fourth quarter brought the score to 0-26.

A one yard touchdown run at 4:15 in the fourth quarter and a successful two point conversion brought the score to its final 8-26. The game ended on a kneel by the Macks after they intercepted a Royals pass with two minutes to go.

The Royals’ overall record drops to 5-2 while the Macks’ improve to 4-3.

The Royals travel next week to take on the Newman Catholic Fighting Cardinals on October 10. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM.

Check back Saturday for video coverage from the game and comments by Royals Head Coach Jeff Sullivan.
