A Warrens man is in custody after multiple charges of child abuse and resisting an officer.

Mark Schultz, 20, faces felony charges of physical abuse of a child to intentionally cause harm which carries a maximum sentence of up to six years imprisonment, or a $10,000 fine or both if convicted.

He is also charged with physical abuse of a child with a high probability of great bodily harm for which he could see up to 12 years and six months imprisonment, or a $25,000 fine or both. For the misdemeanor charge of resisting an officer, Schultz faces up to nine months imprisonment, or a $10,000 fine or both.

According to the criminal complaints, on October 24 a Grand Rapids Police officer was dispatched to the area of Brentwood Dr. and Sampson St. where a complainant reported hearing “blood curdling screams” outside her home. She said she saw two males and a female physically fighting near a red car parked on Brentwood Dr.

The officer spoke with Schultz who had two fresh cuts on his right wrist and his right cheek and forehead were swollen and red. The officer reports Schultz was emanating the odor of intoxicants.

Schultz told the officer he was fighting with is girlfriend, became upset and punched himself in the face. He said the cuts were from crawling on the ground.

The officer spoke with the other reported male and 16-year-old female victim. The victim had a swollen finger and a cut lip.

She said while they were driving to Walmart, Schultz had asked to see her phone. She refused and Schultz reportedly began “flipping out.”

She said he hit her with a closed fist and an open hand multiple times before pulling her hair and wrenching the phone from her hands. The other male then stopped the vehicle and removed Schultz from the car.

Schultz denied the accusation and said he was allowed the phone.

A few days later on October 29 at 4:30 AM, police were dispatched to the 1300 block of 18th Ave. in Wisconsin Rapids to investigate a disturbance. Upon arrival, they discovered Schultz attempting to break into the residence where the 16-year-old victim was living. Witnesses say Schultz was yelling for the girl to come outside.

Officers told Schultz to move away from the house, drop his flashlight and show his hands. Schultz did not comply with the order and police directed him to the ground. He struggled against the handcuffs and unsuccessfully tried to kick the arresting officer.

The officer said Schultz pounded his head on the squad car’s window and cut his forehead.

At 5:40 PM that same day, an officer was dispatched to the same address. They spoke with the 16-year-old victim who said Schultz had assaulted her between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM the evening before. She said she was crying and Schultz told her to “shut up” as he was afraid of the cops getting called.

Schultz then allegedly grabbed the victim, threw her on the ground and began kicking her. She blocked him with her arms. He then began punching her on her arms and legs which she said was very painful and he would not stop.

Schultz is currently held on a $5,000 cash bond.

He returns to court on November 16 at 3:15 PM for a preliminary hearing and arraignment.
