By Jacob Mathias
After a tight beginning, the Assumption Royals varsity boys basketball team defeated the Pacelli Cardinals 49-39 at their home court on December 3.
Assumption entered the game following a close 54-51 loss to the Columbus Catholic Dons in the final game of the Cranberry Classic on November 28. With this win, the Royals record improves to 2-1 in nonconference play.
Assumption was led offensively by sophomore forward Joe Grundhoffer with 19 points and junior guard Trevor Newton with 16 points. As a team, the Royals shot 39 percent from field goal range and only 14 percent from the three-point line. A middling 64 percent of free throws went through the hoop.
Leading scorers for Pacelli were senior guards Jake Elliott and Trevor Glodowski who shot for 12 points each.
The Royals hit the road for their next two games, first to Antigo on December 8 to take on the Red Robins at 7:30 PM and then to Wausau to play the Newman Catholic Fighting Cardinals at 7:15 PM for their first game in Marawood Conference play.
