City to Add New Narcotic Detective Position
By Joe Bachman
Mayor Zach Vruwink on Tuesday gave his thumbs up to a new position to the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department in form of a new narcotics detective.
The move, which was unanimously voted for by the common council, would create a change in the city’s 2016 budget, which was already approved late last year.
The majority of the funding for the new position would come from a recently-vacated position from within the department. Another $10,000 from the city’s IT budget will be transferred to help pay for the spot.
The new position comes in response to the recent spike in heroin and opiate use in the Wisconsin Rapids Area, which city police have dubbed the “hub” of drug activity in Central Wisconsin.
