A 35-year-old man is charged with battery to law enforcement after police say he threatened to harm officers during an altercation.

Leland Pate, of Wisconsin Rapids, is charged with battery or threat to law enforcement and resisting arrest. According to police reports, on Feb. 7, 2016 officers responded to a disturbance on the 1600 block of 23rd Ave. South. Officers spoke to a family member who asked officers to check on Pate, who at the time lay under a table and appeared to be intoxicated.

After officers made contact with Pate, he allegedly provoked an altercation with them, threatening to strike a lieutenant in the head. Officers attempted to place Pate under arrest, but Pate resisted until officers had to use a taser to get Pate under control.

Pate continued his verbal threats of physical harm towards officers and staff in jail, while kicking his jail door. An officer involved in arresting Pate required medical attention after the altercation.

If convicted, Pate faces up to six years imprisonment and up to $10,000 in fines. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb 17.
