South Wood County Humane Society a Community Mainstay

By Joe Bachman
The South Wood County Humane Society (SWCHS)in Wisconsin Rapids have been serving the community for well over a decade, and there are many ways residents can become involved in this non-profit organization.
SWCHS have been educating the public about their animals through adoption and fundraisers for 16 years, now, but that’s not all they do. SWCHS are involved in and creating community events through a multitude of sponsors and local support from businesses.
The Souper Snow Sculpture Spectacular, The SWCHS Iron Chef, and the 5K-9 Walk, Run & Bike and Christmas Baazar are just some of the fun community events the humane society is known for. The SWCHS also offers education and great incentive to adopt pets in need, from including all vaccinations and microchips with adoptions, as well as free pet adoption over the age of five, and buy one-get one pet promotions.
“There are many ways you can volunteer; [Aside from walking pets] you can help out at an event, and we have a friends group that meets monthly, and those people help spread the word about donations, education, etc,” said Bridget Chariton, Executive Director of SWCHS. “We’ve seen a trend of people who do supply drives, boy scout-girl scout involvement — so really, the sky’s the limit.”
