A 30-year-old man faces charges of strangulation after police say he choked a family member during an altercation.

Jessie Young, of Wisconsin Rapids, is charged with strangulation and suffocation and disorderly conduct. According to police reports, on Jan. 22, 2016, a call was placed from the 1600 block of 2nd St. North regarding a domestic disturbance.

Officers arrived to speak to the complainant, who informed them that Young set up a meeting between the two to retrieve some personal items from her residence. During the visit, Young and the complainant got into a verbal altercation over personal matters.

The altercation turned physical as Young allegedly pushed the complainant to the ground and started to choke her to the point where she was fearful of passing out. Officers also spoke to an 8-year-old family member, who witnessed the altercation take place as the complainant described it.

According to police reports, Young allegedly stated that he was pushed by the defendant during the altercation and claimed his innocence.

If convicted, Young faces up to six years imprisonment and up to $10,000 in fines. A 12-person jury trial is scheduled for Apr. 6.
