A 30-year old man is facing charges of sexual assault of a child after police say he assaulted an 11-year-old family member on Nov. 27, 2014.

Derrick Withers, of Wisconsin Rapids, is charged with first degree sexual assault of a child. According to police reports, on Oct. 8, 2015, the complainant told police that she was inappropriately touched by Withers, a family member, on Thanksgiving of 2014.

Withers allegedly laid down beside the complainant on her bed, and started to molest her with his hands. Withers had reportedly been drinking, and smelled of beer.

Detectives spoke to Withers on Nov. 3, 2015, and told police that he believed he did not commit the offense. On Nov. 12, 2015, Withers changed his story after reportedly having a recurring nightmare that he committed the assault. According to police reports, he stated that he is an alcoholic, and now believes that he committed the offense. Withers told police that he plans to stop drinking.

If convicted, Withers faces up to 60 years imprisonment. His initial appearance was held on Mar. 14, and further court dates are pending.
