For the City Times

Universe in the Park (UitP) will be coming to Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 beginning at approximately 8:00 p.m.

Created for the purpose of introducing the general public to astronomy, UitP is a popular outreach program delivered by the UW-Madison Astronomy Department. While UitP is normally presented in state parks throughout Wisconsin during the summer camping season, this unique offering will be presented on the campus of Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids.

The UitP presentation at Lincoln High School will begin just after sunset with a 30-40 minute talk and slide show about astronomy topics. Universe in the Park is intended for audiences of all ages, and parents are encouraged to attend with children as a family activity. This UitP session will be held at Lincoln High School near the softball diamond and tennis courts. Parking is available in the south parking lot. In the event of rain, the presentation will be held in the Lincoln High School cafeteria.

At the conclusion of the talk and weather permitting, a moderate aperture (8”-10”) telescope is set up to provide attendees the opportunity to view available astronomical objects. The UitP session will run as long as there are people interested in looking through the telescope.

This offering in Wisconsin Rapids and the statewide Universe in the Park program is funded, in its entirety, through the generous support of Jere and Anne Fluno.
