Letter: King Wisconsin Veterans Home is an Excellent Facility

To the Editor:

I am responding to all the negativity about the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King that I have been reading about in the newspapers lately.

My husband was a resident of Ainsworth Hall there for 20 months before he passed in July, 2015. He always received excellent care there. The staff treated him and myself and our family as one of their family. It was not just a job to them taking care of him, they cared about him as a person. He was never neglected when he needed help, and the facility was very clean, and they served nutritous meals.

The activities for the residents were always exceptional. Even though some of them could no longer comprehend how to do some activity, they were always included in the group. No one was left out. They had day trips for them, boat trips, shopping trips, picnics, games, etc. A person couldn’t ask for any more then what they offered.

The doctor there was very good at explaining any medical issue to me, and I was called whenever a change was being made. The Chaplains there were extremely supportive to my husband, me, and my family during the time my husband was a patient there, and also to us after he passed.

I would visit my husband 4-5 times a week for long periods of time, and never once did I ever see any wrong doings gong on to him or any other resident there.

I toured some other facilities before my husband became a resident at King, and I did not like what I saw at those, where the patients were just left in their rooms by themselves staring at four walls. This did not happen at King. That is one reason that I chose the Veterans Home for my husband. I knew he would not be left alone like that and he wasn’t. He was well cared for.

He was treated with dignity and respect the whole time he was there. I can’t say enough good things about the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. I would recommend it to anyone who is eligible to go there. It is too bad that there is never anything positive that is ever reported to the newspapers, only the negative.

Sincerely,

Betty Heckman
