Riverkings Land 35 Goals Over Weekend Finale
By Joe Bachman
If a division title wasn’t enough, the Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings put up 35 goals over this weekend to prove they’re ready for the playoffs.
The Riverkings hosted their final two games of the season on Friday and Saturday night, and in unprecedented form, put up nearly three dozen goals in the process. 12 different scorers found the back of the net on Friday night, as the Riverkings routed the Blaine Energy 19-1.
Forward Reed Kaiser picked up three goals on the night, as well as Tyler Albitz who chipped in with three goals in the third period, alone. It was a near perfect night for Riverkings’ goalies, as they allowed in the only Blaine goal of the game with just over three minutes left in the third period.
Erik Schuette and Alti Valdimarsson combined for 20 out of 21 saves on the night.
Saturday night was no walk in the park for Blaine, as the Riverkings continued to bring the heat preparation for Thursday night’s playoff matchup.
Twelve different scorers contributed towards a 16-0 shutout of Blaine, with Ryan Mantz picking up two goals to lead all scorers. Goalie time was split between Joe Frantantonio and Alti Valdimarsson, as they combined for a perfect night, picking up 18 saves.
The Riverkings finish off the season with a 37-7 record, and will take their 10 game winning streak into the playoffs on Thursday night against the Detroit Fighting Irish. This will be a best-of-three series, with all three games (if necessary) to take place at the South Wood County Recreation Center.
