Troop 6089 welcomed a future girl scout into the world on Monday.

Woodside Elementary students and members of Girl Scout Troop 6089 has made it tradition to welcome the first newborn during Girl Scout Week. (March 12-18) The troop welcomed the new bundle of joy with gifts, supplies, and a special “future girl scout” onesie. The week is celebrated in honor of Juliette Gordon Low, who established the first girl scout troop in Savannah, Georgia on March 12, 1912.

“The girls were all eager to hold and meet Emmalyn and all concurred that she was ‘so tiny’ ,” said Troop Leader Camerron Wettern. “Almost all of the Mothers are surprised because they don’t know it’s coming.”

Born on March 15, Emmalyn Haynes weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces, and measured 18 1/4 inches long. According to Wettern, Mother Angel Haynes may have a future scout on her hands.

“Over 75% of those ‘first baby borns’ become girl scouts.” said Wettern.

Since 1912, the Girl Scouts have grown to over 3.5 million members in 146 countries around the world. Their mission is to “instill girls with courage, confidence, and character, who will make the world a better place.”
