WISCONSIN RAPIDS — On Wednesday, the South Wood County Humane Society rescued 74 dogs from a hoarding situation, and residents have responded with an outpouring of support.

According to Executive Director Bridget Chariton, the shelter has received more inquiries about adopting one of the 74 pups than the actual number available. In total, the humane society took in 34 dogs, which puts them at full capacity. The other 40 has been split between the Wisconsin Humane Society, and the Elmbrook Humane Society.

Through the dozens rescued by the shelter, some remain in good spirits while they wait for a new home, while others are unfortunately still in shock. While all dogs are in fair to good condition, the younger ones are noticeably holding up a little better; some even playing in their cages.

“They’ve received as much care and socialization as one person can give to 74 dogs,” said Chariton. “What helped them is that they were in larger group housing, so they weren’t in small cages that had absolutely no contact with the outside world. — “They’re not house-trained, and they’re not sure what a leash is — they might have been split from possible litter-mates, so they’re freaked out.”

Shelter staff has been hard at work giving the dogs baths, grooming and microchip services, and heartworm testing. Those that are cleared and available could be adopted by members of the public as soon as Saturday  when the shelter reopens.

“From what we’ve observed, they will all be candidates for adoption.”

Hours for the shelter are 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. They will be closed on Friday.
