WISCONSIN RAPIDS — A veteran was honored today with a special Quilt of Valor at the Hilltop on Pepper Assisted Living Home.
The non-profit organization’s mission is to cover military veterans and personnel with healing and comforting quilts, made by local quilters. The organization began in 2003, founded by Catherine Roberts, who had a dream where a young man had been surrounded by war demons. This young man’s demeanor of despair changed into one of hope when he was wrapped in a quilt.
Thursday morning honored veteran Richard Thode, a veteran of the Korean War. Thode served in Germany during the war, as well as a chauffeur for multiple Generals. Thode also worked on maintenance for many military vehicles.
Thode was joined by members of his family, including his wife of 66 years, Darlene.
