“…best day ever!”
WISCONSIN RAPIDS — A momentous sentiment on the day from local girl scouts as they attended ‘Safety Day’ last Friday.
Numbers of up to 130 local girl scouts from Camp Sacajawea were treated by the Cranberry Valley Service Unit on hop topics from fire safety to first aid. Admission for the day only cost the scouts a donated canned good, which has been given to a local food shelter.
Safety knows no bounds and no ages, as scouts on hand ranged from ages 5-to-14, with grades 5K through 9th-grade. (Daisy scouts through Senior girl scouts) All in attendance earned safety badges and pins for the day, and with that learned valuable safety procedures including putting together safety kits and learning how to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.
“This is key to why the Safety Day is important because these girls, regardless of age, learned or became familiar with how to respond or act in various situations that will help them to stay safe and help others around them.” said Girl Scout Troop 6089 Leader Cameron Wettern.
Volunteers from the service unit helped organize the event, including Megan Johnson and Angie Wirth.
Contributing agencies include local EMS services (first aid) , local Emergency Management (disaster preparedness), Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools (internet safety), Adams Co. Sheriff and the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department (safe driving), Wood Co. Sheriff’s Department (bicycle safety/K9 unit), Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department (fire safety), Master Krystal from Park Institute Tae Kwon Do (bullying and self defense), and Spirit Medical with the Grand Rapids Volunteer Fire Department for emergency helicopter display.
