WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Caregivers can use all the help they can get. But they don’t always know to ask for it – or how to accept it.

Former Wisconsin Gov. Martin J. Schreiber, who has more than a decade’s worth of Alzheimer’s caregiving experience for his wife Elaine, is on a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of caregiver support. He will speak at 2 p.m. Nov. 6, 2017, at McMillan Memorial Library. His talk is free and open to the public.

Schreiber has been touring Wisconsin and several other states for more than a year to tell the story of his struggles. In his presentations, Schreiber candidly describes his challenges and missteps, and highlights how compassion and humor provide comfort to both caregiver and the person with dementia.

Audiences respond to Schreiber’s raw honesty and practical advice with appreciation and are inspired to find patience, courage and love as they climb the Alzheimer’s mountain.

Schreiber’s acclaimed book, My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver, will be available for purchase for $15. Net proceeds will be used to promote Alzheimer’s caregiver support programs.

Support staff from the Alzheimer’s Association and co-facilitators of the Alzheimer’s caregiver support group serving south Wood County will be available to answer questions and provide information on the group’s monthly meetings and how the group can help caregivers.

For more information, call Mystique Macomber, co-facilitator of the Alzheimer’s caregiver support group, at 715-423-7400 or [email protected], or call McMillan Library at 715-422-5136.
