For the City Times
WISCONSIN RAPIDS –Mid-State Technical College is now officially home to a chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society. The College held a chartering ceremony on the Wisconsin Rapids campus on November 29, immediately followed by its first induction. Present were 38 of the 79 students accepting membership this semester along with family and friends.
According to Jill Quinn, co-advisor of the Mid-State PTK chapter, the recognition and scholarship opportunities that Phi Theta Kappa brings to Mid-State and its student members are unparalleled by any other student organization.
“We are incredibly excited to have chartered a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Mid-State Technical College,” Quinn said. “More than a platform to celebrate the academic successes of our students, PTK membership brings students countless opportunities to hone their leadership skills and develop professionalism.”
Qualifying Mid-State students will be invited to join each fall and spring and must have completed at least 12 credits that can be applied towards an associate degree and have earned at least a 3.5 GPA. Members are eligible for a multitude of scholarships and encouraged to participate in service-leadership opportunities as well as academic research and program implementation based upon a series of topics developed by the PTK International organization.
Founded in 1918, the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society recognizes and encourages excellence among community colleges. Today, the Society is the largest honor society in higher education with nearly three million members and 1,285 chapters located in 50 states, U.S. territories, the British Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany and the Republic of Palau.
