WISCONSIN RAPIDS — Lieutenant for the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department Joel Flewellen has put his name in the hat, as he announced Thursday that he will run for the office of Wood County Sheriff.

Below is a statement released to the media by Flewellen announcing his candidacy:

Dear Citizens of Wood County:

Having been involved in law enforcement in our region my entire professional career, I have strived to make positive changes in our community.  My family and I now feel that it is the time for me to seek elected office.  I want to bring fresh ideas and positive solutions for our area by running for  office of the Wood County Sheriff.

As you may know, I have always been extremely concerned with the issues that face public safety. It is my feeling that there are workable solutions to enhance freedom and quality of life in our communities. I would like to see an increased focus on the opioid epidemic and mental health services, which I believe contribute to the rapidly spreading addiction seen in Wood County, and across the state.

With my education in Criminal Justice as well as  Public Administration coupled with extensive training and  experience of over 25 years with law enforcement in this county, I am a well qualified candidate.  My plan to achieve success for Wood County and its constituents is strategic, involving collaboration and asset management.  My vision is that of sound policies that reflect our community values and ensure the safety of our neighborhoods.

I believe in our County.  Born and raised here, my wife and I chose to raise our children within its borders.  We’re actively involved in the community, and feel the pulse of the grassroots efforts to effect change. Wood County needs a highly qualified and positive leader to be the highest law enforcement officer while leading our Sheriff’s department with experience, education, and motivated leadership.
