Donald Ewald.

Donald Lee Ewald, 72, of Wisconsin Rapids, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, at Aspirus Riverview Hospital following a battle with cancer.

He was born on Jan. 2, 1946, in Beloit, to the late Loyal and Esther (Johnson) Ewald. On June 20, 1992, he was married to Amy Hilscher in Wisconsin Rapids.

Don attended Beloit Memorial High School and finished his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mechanical engineering at UW-Madison from 1968-1976. After graduation, he worked for 25 years at Consolidated Papers, starting as an intern and then taking a permanent position there – at one point being leader of the process control group, also known as Research and Development, and finishing as Senior Project Manager.

As an engineer, Don loved to solve problems, whatever they were. He took pride in finishing whatever project he undertook.

Don was an avid golfer, Badgers and Packers fan. He enjoyed live theater, folk music, winning at cribbage, singing in the Grace Lutheran Choir, red wine and travel.

Survivors include his wife, Amy Ewald of Wisconsin Rapids; daughter, Andrea Ewald of Madison; son, Mitchell Ewald of Madison; brother, James (Midge) Ewald of Port St. Lucie, Florida; and his Portuguese Water Dogs, Emma and Zeppelin. He is further survived by many in-laws, relatives and friends.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at Grace Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids, with Pastor Michelle Nickodemus officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Herman-Taylor Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the family. For online condolences, please visit www.taylorfuneralhome.net.
