High school junior Lizzie Kloehn, Marshfield, inspects a swine lung while respiratory therapist instructor Bill Rosandick inflates the lung with a respirator. The two discussed the lung’s similarities to a human lung as part of Kloehn’s hands-on demonstration of the Respiratory Therapist program during the Spotlight on Health Careers held on Mid-State’s Marshfield campus, Feb. 28.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Mid-State Technical College hosted a Spotlight on Health Careers at its Marshfield campus on Feb. 28. The free, open-house style event gave high school students, parents and community members a chance to tour the campus and explore hands-on demonstrations of Mid-State’s health programs. Attendees also learned about recent program updates and Dual Credit opportunities and participated in a “meet and greet” with faculty.

“Our guests clearly had fun with the hands-on demonstrations of our programs and asked great questions about ways to get started in high school with Dual Credit.” said Lori Weigel, Mid-State’s associate dean of Health. “It’s encouraging to see this level of engagement from prospective students, given the sharp increase in demand we’re seeing for skilled healthcare workers in central Wisconsin.”

The degree programs highlighted at the event included Emergency Medical Technician, Nursing, Nursing Assistant, Respiratory Therapist, Medical Assistant, Central Service Technician, Surgical Technologist, and Phlebotomy Technician as well as the new Medical Laboratory Technician program, starting fall 2018. More information is available atwww.mstc.edu/programs and www.mstc.edu/dual-credit.
