Obituary: Shirley Randall, 96

Shirley Randall

Shirley Randall, age 96, of Wisconsin Rapids, passed away quietly in her home on Feb. 20, 2018.

She was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minn. to Helmer and Inez Bjornberg.

She enlisted in the U.S. Navy Waves Reserve in 1945 and received training at Hunter College, New York City, and later at St. Albans Naval Hospital, Long Island, followed by duty at Norfolk Naval Hospital. She married Philip Randall on Sep. 8, 1945, at the Norfolk Naval Chapel in Norfolk, Virginia.

Shirley graduated from Frederick High School in Wisconsin and later earned her Bachelor’s degree in home economics education from UW-Stout in Menominee and a Master’s degree in clothing and related art with a specialty in textiles at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. Her career in teaching home economics began at Grantsburg High School and was followed by Beecher High School, Flint Community College and finally retired from UW-Stevens Point in 1988.

She had many hobbies and was a very active member of the First English Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids. Among her favorite activities, she enjoyed hand quilting, traveling, gardening, Red Hat Club, church activities and especially spending time with family and friends.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Michael Randall and Jeff (Marlyce) Randall; her daughter, Mindy (Kevin) Pixler; daughter-in-law, Leslie Randall; sister, Janet Winn; seven grandchildren, April Pixler, Jennifer (Meyer) Lehman, Erin (John Czarnota) Randall, Jill (Jeff) Kersten, Justin (Amanda) Pixler, Brooke (Brandon) Nontelle and Alicia (Jacob) Hutkowski; 11 great-grandchildren, Avery, Emmet and Oren Lehman, Jonathan Czarnota, Cole and Connor Kersten, Ethan Grunden, Dakota Doeller, Mason and Easton Pixler and Brinley Nontelle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Philip W. Randall; and son, Philip T. Randall.

The memorial service for Shirley will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at the Herman-Taylor Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids, with Pastor Cheryl Davis officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. For online condolences, please visit www.taylorfuneralhome.net.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial in Shirley’s name for the Greater Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Association.
