Hunger Coalition Seeks Volunteer Teams to Build Canned Food Sculptures During “United We Can”
Submitted by Emily Stieve, Community Impact Director
WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The South Wood County Hunger Coalition is hosting its sixth annual United We Can food sculpture contest. Teams from around the community will create sculptures made entirely out of canned food (and other basic need items) donated by businesses and friends. After the event, the Hunger Coalition will distribute the collected items to area food programs.
The South Wood County Hunger Coalition is currently recruiting volunteer teams to build food sculptures. Construction for United We Can will be June 7, 2018 from 10am – 4pm at Witter Field. Food sculptures will be on display during the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters game against the Battle Creek Bombers starting at 7:05pm.
Food sculptures will be judged and there will be awards for the “Most Creative,” and game attendees will have a chance to vote on their favorite sculptures for the “Community Choice Award.” Each team will receive four complimentary tickets to the Rafter’s June 7th game.
NEW THIS YEAR:
- Teams can choose to compete in the “Major League” (estimating using over 500 items) or the “Minor League” (estimating using less than 500 items).
- Organizations who wish to participate but are not available to build that day can now sponsor a team.
- Teams that register by May 3, 2018 will be entered for a chance to win a special prize from the Rafters!
Teams can build any kind of structure – it can be as simple as a logo or it can be ornate. The sculpture must fit in a 10’ x 10’ space; and props may be used but 50% must be comprised of canned food items. Canned food items can be collected from a food drive or purchased with a corporate donation.
In 2017, this event collected 7,000 pounds of food for a total of 32,000 pounds of food since 2013! In 2017, the winners were:
- Most Creative: Paper City Savings Association
- Most Nutritious: Domtar
- Community Choice Award: ERCO Worldwide
