WISCONSIN RAPIDS — Airport, city, and state officials gathered for a groundbreaking which will kickstart improvements to Alexander Field on Thursday.

Incoming upgrades include apron expansion and reconstruction to increase parking and aircraft capacity and safety, parallel taxiways to lessen runway congestion, runway lighting and surface improvements, as well as a corporate hangar area.

“With the ongoing development of Sand Valley Golf Resort in the Town of Rome, people from around the world are coming to central Wisconsin and can see investment opportunity here,” said Mayor Zach Vruwink. “The upgrading of Alexander Field-South Wood County Airport offers additional incentive for visitors to invest in our workforce and the area.”

In fall of 2017, the city was awarded $5.65 million in federal funding for such improvements, including  a taxiway stormwater mitigation project.

“The accelerated improvements made possible by State and Federal investments will promote economic growth from the emerging Sand Valley demand and will set the stage for a generation of new activity among other companies seeking similar assets.” said Vruwink.

Alexander Field is located at 3620 First St. South.
