For the Rapids City Times

WISCONSIN RIVER — Whether you paddle by kayak, canoe, or SUP, the Current young professional group invites you to join Wisconsin Rapids residents and visitors for Paddlefest 2.0, Aug. 11, noon to 4 p.m.

Current has a mission to connect and engage the young workforce and families to help grow and generate enthusiasm and opportunities for the community.

The group will meet at the sandbar next to the Riverview Expressway Bridge for a group photo at noon. From the sandbar, the group will paddle downstream along the west river bank, turn around by the Firefighters Memorial/ Ben Hanson Park and paddle upstream on the east side of the river back to the sandbar.

This is the second year for Paddlefest.

“2017 was the first year and unfortunately the weather didn’t hold up for us, but we still went through with it,” sais Sarah Salewski, vice president of Current. “It was really exciting to sit on the sandbar thinking no one would show up and see about 30 paddlers, braving the rain, paddling your way for the noon meet-up time. There are a lot of paddle enthusiasts out there and this is neat way to bring them together!

“A point of pride in Wisconsin Rapids is our natural resources; however, the river is really underutilized and such a beautiful asset. Current wants to get folks on the river, see the city from a different perspective, meet someone new, and just enjoy what the river has to offer.”

Paddlers are reminded it is the law that all vessels, including canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, must have one USCG-approved wearable life jacket for each person on board. Remember to bring water and/or beverages of your choice, snacks, sun screen, and proper shoes for rocky areas.

Recommended launch sites are along the east river bank by the intersection of Maple Street and Second Street and the Ben Hanson Park / Fireman’s Memorial Boat Launch
