Port Edwards cruises in first victory over New Lisbon

PORT EDWARDS – On Nov. 26, the Port Edwards girls basketball team got their first taste of victory as they outran the Lady Rockets in a final score of 72-52. The Blackhawks were ahead at halftime 41-22.

Leading the way for the Blackhawks was Jade Martin with 24 points, connecting on 9 of 12 shots, including three 3-pointers. Kaitlyn Lyp added 22 points of her own to go along with six assists.  Brynna Hawk chipped in 11 points, along with Kara Rzepka’s six. Taylor Martin had five, and Krystal Rzepka had four.  Port Edwards had three 3-pointers, all by J. Martin and was nine of 16 from the free throw line.

The Lady Rockets were led in scoring by Mya Delgado with 24 points, 21 of them coming in the second half.  She connected on six 3-pointers.  Other scorers for New Lisbon were Libby Rogers with 13, Morgan Sanders with six, Kayla Robison with three, and Kassidy Earhart, Tess Bigalke, and Krista Cook all with two points each.  New Lisbon had six 3-pointers, all by Delgado, and was 10 of 17 from the charity stripe.

Port Edwards loses a tough one in overtime to Northland Lutheran

In a come-from-behind victory, the Wildcats of Northland Lutheran defeated the Port Edwards girls in overtime, 67-61.  The Blackhawks went into halftime up, 37-28.  But, the Wildcats overcame the nine point deficit and tied the game late in the second half.  The Blackhawks got into foul trouble and had three of their starters foul out before the end of the second half.  At the end of regulation the score was tied 57-57.  Northland Lutheran scored the first points in the extra period and never looked back.  The Blackhawks could only connect on four free throws in the overtime period.

Northland Lutheran had four players in double figures: Kari Kreckau led the way with 19 points, followed by Clare Edelburg with 16, Brooke Newmann with 13, and Mikayla Obsuzt with 12. Maya Price chipped in six points and Kelsie Kreklau added one point.  The Wildcats had three 3-pointers, all by Edelburg, and shot 16 for 41 from the free throw line.

The Blackhawks were led in scoring by Kaitlyn Lyp, who led all scorers with 28 points.  Brynna Hawk added 13 of her own.  Taylor Martin and Krystal Rzepka each chipped in seven, followed by Jade Martin with three, Kailer Lyp with two, and Kara Rzpeka with one. Port Edwards had four 3-pointers, one each by Hawk, J. Martin, T. Martin, and Kr. Rzepka.  They were 7 of 11 from the free throw line.  The loss drops Port Edwards to a 1-3 record. They are in action Dec. 4, as they start conference play at Almond-Bancroft.
