MARSHFIELD – The holiday season has come and gone, and so has Wood County’s “Keep the Wreath Green” fire safety awareness campaign. This year the awareness campaign ended with three fires, which is a 63 percent reduction from 2017, when eight fires were recorded. One fire occurred in Nekoosa on Dec. 1, the second fire was in Marshfield on Dec. 17, and the third one was also in Marshfield on Christmas Day.
This is just the second time in the 25-year history of the holiday season campaign during which only three fires have occurred, according to Marshfield Fire Chief Scott Owen. The other year was 2013.
The year with the highest amount of fires was 2000, when there were 20 fires in Wood County during the holidays – the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.
The next fire safety awareness campaign, Keep the Forest Green, starts March 1.
