WISCONSIN RAPIDS – A Nekoosa man is being retried for a reckless homicide charge.

Miguel Oertel, 21, is being re-sentenced for killing his ex-girlfriend’s mother in August 2015. He was originally convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison during a jury trial in 2016 for the death of Theresa Coates.

In March of last year, a judge granted Oertel a retrial due to an alleged deficient performance by his attorney. At his plea hearing Feb. 4, Oertel withdrew his plea of innocent by reason of insanity and entered the guilty plea to one charge of second-degree reckless homicide.

Oertel will be re-sentenced on April 17.
