Port Edwards Blackhawks

For the Rapids City Times

PACELLI – Valentine’s Day was a sweet night for the Port Edwards girls basketball team. They found themselves in a tough battle against the Pacelli Cardinals, at Pacelli, but in the end came out on top 48-39.

The Blackhawks went in at the half holding onto a 20-16 lead. The win secures the Blackhawks second-place tie with conference rival Rosholt, both finishing with 9-3 records in conference play. Pacelli wins the conference title, finishing with a 10-2 record.

Kaitlyn Lyp and Jade Martin had 19 and 15 points, respectively, while teammate Taylor Martin added seven, Brynna Hawk had four, and Krystal Rzepka had three.

The Blackhawks minimized the Cardinals’ chances by having just six turnovers as a team. The win brings the Blackhawks regular season to a close, finishing with an 11-9 overall record.

First round of regional action starts Feb. 19, as the Port Edwards girls travel to Northland Lutheran in a No. 8 vs. No. 9 match up.
