WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Miguel-Angel Oertel will continue a 15-year prison sentence for shooting his ex-girlfriend’s mother.
Oertel, 21, was in Wood County Court on April 17 for re-sentencing on homicide charges for the August 2015 incident.

He was originally convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison during a jury trial in 2016 for the death of Theresa Coates.

In March of last year, a judge granted Oertel a retrial due to an alleged deficient performance by his attorney. At his plea hearing Feb. 4, Oertel withdrew his plea of innocent by reason of insanity and entered the guilty plea to one charge of second-degree reckless homicide.

During the April 17 court appearance, no changes were made to Oertel’s sentence.
Oertel will be released in 2030.
