Wood County stop leads to chase

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – A South Wood County man who police suspected of drunk driving escaped on foot after crashing his car.

According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, deputies pulled over 25-year-old Cameron C. Allen, Nekoosa, May 7 at 2:30 a.m., for operating left of the center line on Highway 173 at Highway 80 in the town of Remington, on suspicion of intoxication.

During the traffic stop, a passenger got out of the vehicle as the driver fled the scene, leading to a police chase. The pursuit went into the city of Nekoosa where deputies ended the chase for safety reasons. Shortly after that, the suspect vehicle crashed into a fence and exterior wall of the Domtar Paper Mill at State Hwy 173 and Garrison Avenue in the city of Nekoosa.

The driver fled the scene on foot. The passenger who got out of the vehicle during the initial traffic stop was identified as 59-year-old Thomas J. Braun, Nekoosa.
