South Wood County Recreation Center and Wisconsin Rapids Figure Skating Club Learn to Skate USA classes showed their appreciation to the utility workers on July 25. Submitted photo.

“It is a long and slow process to build and maintain skating ice in the Wisconsin heat and humidity,” said Jim Arnold SWCRC general manager. “We were very close to losing the ice this week and close to cancelling our summer Learn to Skate program, club ice times, camp and test sessions, which would have resulted in extra expense and less income for our club and facility.

“The ice rink power came back on Sunday morning a little after 9 a.m. The entire sheet of ice had already began to sweat and turn into a swimming pool. With the power back, the rink crew began rebuilding the ice and was able to save the ice and continue with regularly scheduled skating lessons Monday evening.”

To thank the utility linemen who restored the power, the WRFSC provided a free meal during their Learn to Skate program on July 25. Group volunteers provided pizza, drinks, brownies, and ice cream to those that came to the aid of the Wisconsin Rapids community.
