For the City Times

STEVENS POINT/WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Stevens Point Area YMCA was dealt a substantial blow the weekend of July 19 when storms swept through Peters Family YMCA Camp Glacier Hollow in Amherst Junction. To ensure the safety of staff and campers, YMCA Camp Glacier Hollow has been moved to YMCA Camp Alexander in Wisconsin Rapids.

Point staff continues to work with tree removal and insurance professionals, contractors, DNR and others to sift through the damage and evaluate what the rest of our summer will look. The extent of the damage the storm has had on the camp is significant and is not fully covered by insurance, specifically relating to tree removal.

The Point YMCA seeks contributions for the community. To support the camp monetarily, visit www.spymca.org/give and select “Camp Storm Relief.” Donations may also be made in person or by mail:  1000 Division Street, Stevens Point, WI, 54481. Funds will go directly to restoration efforts including machine rentals, equipment replacement, program supplies, construction costs, logging costs, and supplies.

Volunteer support will also be needed in cleaning debris and buildings.

For more information, follow the Stevens Point Area YMCA Facebook page or visit www.spymca.org/ca
