WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Two Wisconsin Rapids Riverking players will represent their home countries in the World Junior Championships. Anze Prostor, of Slovenia, and Captain Harlads Jirgens, of Latvia, made their National U20 squads to compete in this year’s World Junior Championship.
Coach Marty Quarters said of the accomplishment, “Having Riverking players being chosen to play at the World Junior Championship speaks volume of the level of our play which has increased each year. Also, being able to recruit from all over the world show the positive impact that diversity has on the Riverkings and brings to central Wisconsin as we continue to build hockey up and down the river.”
Prostor joined the Riverkings in October and has claimed nine points – six goals and three assists – so far this season. Quarters said that Prostor is a highly versatile player and is a big offensive threat.
Jirgens is a returner to the Riverkings squad after joining halfway through the 2018-19 season. This year he dons the captain’s “C” on his jersey and is known as a leader on and off the ice. The starting defenseman has 24 points this season – 10 goals and 14 assists.
The IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will be held in Belarus, Minsk, Dec. 9-15.
