OT free throw wins game for Nekoosa

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Nekoosa boys basketball beat Port Edwards in a game that came down to an overtime double-bonus free throw shot.
The Papermakers hosted a non-conference game against Port Edwards on Jan. 27, in which Port Edwards got out to an early up 18-11.
Nekoosa fought back and went into halftime only down one, 22-21. The second half was back and forth the entire way.
Nekoosa was up 50-47 with 13 seconds left when Quinten Tranel hit a 3-pointer for Port Edwards at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. The game was tied 60-60 when Jace Lobner got fouled with two seconds left and hit the second of double-bonus free throws to win the game 61-60.
Leading Nekoosa in scoring for the game was Jace Lobner with 22 points; Damek Walker had 19; and Trent Waltenberg added 12 more.
Port Edwards was lead by Quinten Tranel, scoring 19 points. Nate Gibbs and David Gibbs each added 10 points.
Nekoosa moves to 4-8 overall. Port Edwards moves to 8-6 overall.
Nekoosa’s next game is at Black River Falls on Jan. 29. Port Edwards will head to Athens for a game on Jan. 31.
