Letter to the Editor: Former council member weighs in on election

Dear editor,

As a 10-year former city council member and Park and Recreation Commissioner, I am proud to share why I am supporting current Mayor Zach Vruwink for re-election.

I can see many similarities to the challenges we faced when I was in office and those we face now. For example, in 2005, after 13 years of debating the location and scope of work for a Senior Resource Center, fellow city council members and I made the tough decision to borrow for the Centralia Center project.

Similar to today, Mayor Zach Vruwink and council members brought resolution in 2017 to end a 20-year debate on the city swimming pool discussion.

Both projects required significant investment from donors, foundations and taxpayers. We must invest if we are going to have a future as a city. Mayor Vruwink has smartly prioritized these projects just like those of basic infrastructure like streets and utilities. His administration has wisely secured state and federal investments so taxpayers are not left to foot the entire bill of necessary projects. Mayor Zach has successfully worked with Youth, families, and the Park and Recreation Commission to identify a vision for the future of the zoo benefiting future generations. He is also doing this with Robinson Park and others.

This city must continue to take steps forward if it is to have a strong future. Mayor Zach is leading this city in times of great challenge and has built great momentum.

Join me in voting for Mayor Zach Vruwink.
