Man arrested following Hewitt death

WOOD COUNTY – On Dec. 21, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department responded to the village of Hewitt, for a report of an unresponsive 22-year-old woman.
“Initial investigation by the Wood County Sheriff’s Department showed that the female likely died of a drug overdose. A forensic autopsy of the female was completed on Dec. 22, 2021, which indicated a suspected overdose,” stated a release from Wood County Sheriff Shawn Becker.
“The Wood County Sheriff’s Department is waiting for the final autopsy report from the UW Hospital in Madison.”
On Dec. 22, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department executed multiple search warrants and interviewed several individuals who were allegedly involved in the incident.
“On Dec.22, 2021, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department took into custody a male subject from Wisconsin Rapids who provided the deceased female the drugs that likely caused her death,” the release added.
Luis A. Reyes, 26, is being held at the Wood County Jail in connection with the death of the 22-year-old woman.
Investigators from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department will be requesting a charge of first degree reckless homicide, along with other drug-related charges to the Wood County District Attorney’s Office.
“Our investigative team did an outstanding job with this case. Within 24 hours of the reported overdose, the suspect, Luis Reyes, was identified, located, and taken into custody,” Sheriff Becker stated.
“The Wood County Sheriff’s Department takes a strong stance against individuals who sell or distribute controlled substances in our community and will continue to work diligently to keep these types of dangerous drugs off the streets of central Wisconsin.”
