WISCONSIN RAPIDS – At its Jan. 10 meeting, the Wisconsin Rapids Parks & Recreation committee broke the tie on a public vote to name the city’s aquatic park area.

The name of the park, located at 681 Chestnut Street, was put to vote between three options – Wisconsin Rapids Recreation Complex, Witter Community Park, and Witter Park.

Witter Park and Wisconsin Rapids Recreation Complex tied at 91 votes, with Witter Community Park coming in at 61 votes.

“I prefer the Witter approach, with the nod to the community and the name in this area for a long time, but that is only my personal opinion,” committee member, Craig Broeren said during discussion.

“I would just toss out there that the quadplex is likely going to be the Rapids Area Sports Complex or Wisconsin Rapids Area Sports Complex, so the idea that those are very similar might cause some directional issues at some point in the future, if we were going with the Wisconsin Rapids Recreation Complex.”

After discussion, the committee voted unanimously to name the complex Witter Park.

The committee also voted to change the park’s hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays to be open until 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. on Fridays, instead of 10 a.m.
