PLOVER – Plover Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10262 Rifle Squad awarded a $1,000 scholarship to University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point ROTC Cadet Jalena Sprague in a ceremony at the Post on April 30.
“Cadet Sprague, currently a sophomore in the ROTC program, received the Plover VFW Rifle Squad scholarship award for an Outstanding Cadet from Plover VFW Rifle Squad Commander Norb Strasser. She also received a citation and medal to commemorate her outstanding achievements and exceptional leadership ability,” a post release stated.
Sprague hails from Nekoosa and will graduate in May 2024, with a major in psychology and minors in art and military science.
She will commission on active duty in the Army after graduation.
Cadet Sprague also serves as a volunteer at campus blood drives and military events. During her free time, she enjoys painting, photography, sculpture and hiking.
Traditionally, the award is presented at the Annual Army Pointer Company ROTC Military Ball, but in observance of COVID-19 precautions, the ROTC Northwoods Battalion conducted a modified awards ceremony hosted by the Plover VFW Post.
Plover VFW also presented an endowment check of $10,500 to Jill Steckbauer, Director of Mid-State Technical College Foundation, Inc., to fund a perpetual, annual $500 scholarship for a non-traditional student veteran enrolled in an MSTC program.
The annual scholarship will be awarded beginning in the fall 2022 semester. For more information and how to apply, contact Director Steckbauer at 715-422-5322 or email [email protected].
