Suspected drunk driver kills motorcyclist

PORT EDWARDS — A Port Edwards man was killed, after his motorcycle was rear-ended. The crash occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 on Highway 54 in the Township of Port Edwards.
According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, a 47-year-old Port Edwards man was traveling westbound on Highway 54, when his motorcycle was hit from behind, near Green Grove Lane, by a car driven by a 38-year-old Vesper woman. The man was ejected from his cycle and suffered serious injuries. Life-saving measures were taken, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash is under investigation by the Wood County Sheriff’s Department and is also being reconstructed by the Wisconsin State Patrol. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. The names of those involved are not being released at this time.
Wood County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted by Wood County Sheriff’s Rescue, Township First Responders, Wisconsin Rapids Ambulance, Port Edwards Fire, Nekoosa Police Department, Wood County Coroner’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol.
Highway 54 was closed for several hours between Port Road and County Highway G due to the crash.
