FOR CITY TIMES
FRIENDSHIP – An inmate originally from another county died while in custody at the Adams County Jail.
According to Sheriff Brent York, a 38-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in his jail cell just after 6 p.m. on Monday July 15. Deputies immediately began lifesaving efforts. Lifestar Ambulance arrived at the jail four minutes later and took over lifesaving measures. Additional patrol deputies also assisted. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead.
The inmate was first incarcerated June 21 in another county and was transported to the Adams County Jail on July 1, and was being held as a sentenced inmate.
Wisconsin State Statute 175.47 requires an outside agency to lead all investigations involving officer-involved deaths. This in-custody death investigation does not fall under this statute; however, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office has requested the Waushara and Marquette County Sheriff’s Offices to complete the investigation in the interest of transparency.
Notification to the Regional Detention Facility Specialist from the Office of Detention Facilities has also been made. By statute and Administrative Rule the Office of Detention Facilities will also conduct a review of this incident.
