Port Edwards girls find a way in first round

KRONENWETTER – The Port Edwards girls basketball team pulled out a 52-51 victory over the Northland Lutheran Wildcats in the first round of regional action Feb. 19.
The Blackhawks held a slim 19-18 edge going into the locker room at the half. The second half saw many lead changes between the two teams, but at about the 3:00, the Blackhawks found themselves down by seven. After a 3-point basket by Taylor Martin, a 3-pt. play by Brynna Hawk, and a couple of steals and baskets by Krystal Rzepka and Kaitlyn Lyp, the Port Edwards girls found themselves back in the game.
Kaitlyn Lyp was able to hit two free throws with about 18 seconds left in the game to put the Blackhawks up by one. The Wildcats had a last-second shot attempt that fell short, sealing the win for the Blackhawks.
Kaitlyn Lyp led the team with 19 points, while Jade Martin added 12 points. Teammates Taylor Martin contributed 10, Brynna Hawk had five, Krystal Rzepka had four, and Kailer Lyp added two.
The Port Edwards girls team moves on to the second round of regional action as they travel to Wausau to take on the No. 1 seed Newman Catholic Cardinals Feb. 22.
