WOOD COUNTY – For many, the holiday season brings a sense of joy and celebration. However, for others, the pressure to meet unrealistic expectations can lead to significant stress and anxiety. Janet Wimmer, a clinical therapist with Aspirus Health, shares expert advice on how to manage these challenges and prioritize mental wellness during this busy time of year.
“One of the biggest challenges is the unrealistic picture of the holidays that’s often portrayed in advertisements and media,” says Wimmer. “We see perfect, magical get-togethers, but our expectations don’t always align, which can lead to anxiety, frustration, and increased stress.”
Wimmer encourages individuals to adjust their mindset by focusing on what they can truly enjoy, rather than striving for a “perfect” holiday. She also advises managing financial pressures by planning ahead and sticking to a budget.
“Make a budget, plan ahead, and only spend what you can afford. Consider homemade gifts or heartfelt cards as meaningful alternatives to expensive presents,” she suggests.
Beyond finances, setting boundaries and managing time is essential for maintaining mental well-being during the holidays.
