Balance program aims to prevent falls among seniors

Posted

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – A free seven-week program designed to help older adults improve their balance and prevent falls will begin next month at the South Wood County YMCA.
The Stepping On class, offered by the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin in partnership with the YMCA, targets adults 60 and older who live independently. The program runs Fridays from Sept. 12 through Oct. 24, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
“Falls aren’t a normal part of getting older,” said Jennifer Clark, community health educator for the ADRC. “There are proven ways to improve balance and stay safe, and this class offers them in a supportive, hands-on setting.”
The program features light, progressive exercises designed to build strength and stability. Participants will receive practical tips on footwear, home safety and everyday movement from guest experts including a physical therapist, pharmacist, optometrist and community safety specialist.
The class is open to anyone in the community, regardless of YMCA membership status. Space is limited, and registration is required by calling 888-486-9545.

While the program is free, organizers welcome contributions. The suggested donation is $10 for the entire seven-week session.
Clark said the program serves both those who have experienced falls and those looking to prevent them.
“Whether you’ve had a fall in the past or simply want to prevent one in the future, Stepping On provides the tools and confidence you need to stay active and independent,” she said.
